Title : Galaxy XI, the world's largest commercial communications satellite
Caption :
Galaxy XI, the world's largest commercial communications satellite and the first HS 702 to be built by Hughes Space and Communications Company, is shown undergoing final preparations before shipment to French Guiana for an Ariane launch on Dec. 21, 1999. Built for PanAmSat Corporation, Galaxy XI will carry 64 transponders, 40 in Ku- and 24 in C-band, and will have more than 10 kW of power at end of life. The satellite will provide video distribution, telephony and data services to North America and Brazil for at least 15 years. Angled solar reflector panels, highly efficient dual-junction solar cells, xenon ion propulsion, and enlarged heat radiators are a few of the state-of-the-art technologies being utilized on this highest power-ever spacecraft.
